Mark Zuckerberg Career

FaceMash

It was a summer evening in 2003 when Zuckerberg was in his hostel but he could not sleep that night. So he thought of making such a site while sitting, in which he would show the photos of any two girls to the user and ask who is the hotter among them. And they also started working on it. When it came to the photos of the girls, they decided to hack the database of the university where the profile photos of the students were uploaded. And took the photo from the same database and put it in front of the user in which the user had to tell who is the hotter among the two. His program became very popular at Harvard University in a very short time. And the number of visitors to that site increased. Due to this, a time also came when so many people came to that site that the server crashed due to overload. As soon as the university administration came to know about this, Mark Zuckerberg had to appear before the computer hacking committee. At that time no one praised him for his work, rather disciplinary action was taken against him. So that no other student should do such work. But after this incident, Mark understood how fast such things can spread in society. Although today when the Harvard administration is asked about this incident, no one refuses to say anything or comment on this incident.

Facebook Success Story

10 months before FaceMash was created, a Harvard student named Divya Narendra was thinking of creating a social network for Harvard students. Narendra’s idea was to set up a social network in which students would use Harvard-provided email addresses as usernames. Divya Narendra’s other partners in this project were Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, who were twin brothers. His father was a financial advisor, so he did not have to worry about arranging money for future projects. Divya Narendra wanted to build his social network with Mark Zuckerberg, and for this, he had also talked to Mark. And said that first it will be named Harvard Connection and later it will be known as Connect U. And it was also discussed that its users will be able to post their photos, personal information, and other links through this platform. It considered assigning Mark the responsibility of developing the social network system through programming the site and other code. This was followed by a private meeting between Divya Narendra, twin brothers Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, and Zuckerberg, in which Mark agreed to join the project. But it was while he was working at Harvard Connection that he had a brilliant idea about creating his own social network. And soon after that on February 04, 2004, Mark registered the domain name TheFacebook.com. And they even launched it inside Harvard University. In this work, Zuckerberg also took along a new partner, Eduardo Saverin. After this, as users increased on Facebook, Zuckerberg and his partner Eduardo Saverin kept hiring other programmers as well. He hired his neighbor Darren Moskowitz as the third chief programmer. Zuckerberg owned 503.6 million shares after Facebook’s IPO, thus controlling 60% of the company. 35% went to Eduardo Saverin and 5% to newcomer Moskovitz. After that registration on this social network was opened to all students and for this .edu email address was made mandatory. During this time the user had to fill a detailed profile to sign up. And in this, it was also tried that everyone should make their real photo as their profile picture. Soon when Facebook started getting success from all sides, Facebook wanted to get out of the field of education as well. In such a situation, Mark Zuckerberg was looking for investors. And it is said that Zuckerberg received the first investment for Facebook from Peter Thiel, one of the founding members of Paypal. He allocated an amount of $500,000 to Facebook.

After receiving the first investment, the Facebook project began to grow at a very rapid pace, and within a year it had more than one million users. After this Mark Zuckerberg needed more investment to grow Facebook further, meanwhile Accel Partners made a big investment of $12.7 million in Facebook, and after that Greylock Partners also invested $27.5 million in Facebook.

Due to this, by the year 2005, Facebook was being used in all educational institutions and universities in the United States. After that Facebook opened its doors to the general public as well. New features of Facebook such as real-life friends talking to each other online via chat made it extremely attractive. Users on Facebook increased at a very fast pace but it was not clear how much the company would earn. However, everyone was showing the possibility that Facebook will also focus on advertising as its main source of income. And later this also happened because while creating a profile on Facebook, the user has to give his detailed information and on the basis of the same information, Facebook shows related advertisements to the user.
